What is From Street to Studio? Filip Stoica's movement method
How Filip Stoica's method joins street dance, contemporary technique and martial arts, what a session looks like, and who it is for.
From Street to Studio is the movement method developed by Bucharest choreographer Filip Stoica. It joins the explosive energy of street dance with the precision of contemporary technique and the awareness of martial arts, and it trains one skill above all: composing in the moment, with other people watching.
Where it comes from
Filip started in breaking and contact improvisation before training as a choreographer at UNATC in Bucharest. The method grew out of that path. Street dance gives power, rhythm and a relationship with the floor; contemporary technique gives release, weight and line; martial arts give focus, distance and timing. From Street to Studio treats them as one vocabulary rather than three styles.
The three layers
- Floor, gravity and flow: moving in and out of the floor safely, using weight instead of muscle, and linking movement without stopping.
- Real-time composition: making choices while moving — tempo, space, repetition, stillness — so that improvisation reads as a piece, not as a warm-up.
- Performing with the audience: treating spectators as partners, reading the room, and letting attention shape the dramaturgy.
What a session looks like
A class starts with a long, physical warm-up on the floor, builds short phrases that everyone can own, then opens them up through improvisation tasks in pairs and groups. It usually ends with short showings where part of the group watches and gives back what they saw. Intensives follow the same arc across three days, one layer per day.
Who it is for
The method is taught to dancers from street and contemporary backgrounds, actors, students and community groups. Participants need to be comfortable working on the floor; everything else is adapted to the group. Filip has taught at IDEO IDEIS, DINAM, HazarDance and Linotip, among others.
Formats
- Open classes in Bucharest
- Three-day intensives with a certificate of completion
- Guest workshops for schools, festivals and companies
- A teacher certification, in preparation

Questions
Do I need to be a trained dancer?
No. Groups mix dancers, actors and beginners. You need to be comfortable working on the floor.
Is it a street dance class?
Not in the sense of learning a style. Street dance is one of three sources; the goal is composition and presence, not steps.
Can the method be brought to my school or festival?
Yes, as a guest workshop of one to five days, shaped around the group's level and your programme.
